Diagnostic Assessment
Before any instruction begins, we identify exactly where your child’s reading and writing skills need the most attention, not just what they’re getting wrong, but why. That becomes the foundation for everything that follows.
As Seen On
Our Approach
We offer advanced English tutoring that transforms how students approach complex texts, construct arguments, and articulate ideas.
Most students who struggle with English have been told to use more evidence, write stronger transitions, or vary their sentence structure. This is technically correct but addresses symptoms without touching the underlying problem: the student doesn’t yet know how to think on the page.
A student can produce a five-paragraph essay that hits every structural marker and still say nothing. That’s because writing is thinking made visible, and if the thinking isn’t there, no amount of structural coaching will fix it. When a student’s writing consistently falls flat, it’s rarely because they can’t write. It’s because nobody has helped them figure out what they’re actually trying to say.
Our approach starts with understanding how your child communicates, where their writing breaks down, how they read complex texts, and what kind of instruction actually connects with them. Character matters here too. A student who learns to argue with precision, read with genuine curiosity, and respond to feedback without shutting down carries those habits into every course, every college seminar, and every professional context that follows.

What We Offer
To give your child the most targeted support, we offer specialized programs across core English academic and testing disciplines:
Before any instruction begins, we identify exactly where your child’s reading and writing skills need the most attention, not just what they’re getting wrong, but why. That becomes the foundation for everything that follows.
From five-paragraph essays to college-level argumentative writing, we teach students how to construct a clear thesis, build a logical argument, and use evidence effectively. The goal is writing that thinks, not writing that fills space.
We develop the habits of critical reading that AP English and competitive academic programs demand, including annotation, inference, identifying authorial choices, and translating observation into analysis.
We provide specialized English tutoring for private school and boarding school applicants, helping them master the specific reading and writing skills required for competitive admissions processes and rigorous independent school curricula.
AP Lang rewards students who can analyze rhetoric and construct persuasive arguments. We work through the synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argumentative essays that define the exam, with particular attention to the skills that separate a 3 from a 5.
AP Lit demands close reading, thematic analysis, and the ability to write under pressure about unseen texts. We develop the interpretive confidence and essay fluency students need to perform consistently on exam day.
We prepare students for the specific reading and writing demands of each test, which are evidence-based analysis, grammar and usage, and the rhetorical reasoning that both exams reward.
We help students master the essay components of private school entrance exams, focusing on the specific prompt types, time management strategies, and clear, structured writing that these assessments require.
Improved From C to A in AP English Language
“Our daughter always thought she was a bad writer until she started at Cardinal. Her tutor didn’t just mark up her papers. She dissected them sentence by sentence, showing her how to think clearly on the page, sentence by sentence. She is now a confident writer and an editor for the school paper.”
Scored 5 on AP English Literature — Accepted to Yale
“AP Lit was the course our son was most anxious about. Cardinal helped him slow down and actually read, not just for plot, but for what the author was saying and why. His essays went from vague to genuinely insightful. His AP score reflected that.”
