As Seen On
The Exam
The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a standardized admissions exam required by most Catholic high schools for 8th-grade applicants seeking entry into grade 9. It is designed by Scholastic Testing Service (STS) and administered by individual schools and dioceses on their own schedules, typically between November and January.
The HSPT is notable for two characteristics that make preparation especially consequential: its extreme time pressure (approximately 30 seconds per question) and the fact that it is strongly intended to be taken only once. The STS recommends a single sitting, and most schools treat the test accordingly. Students should confirm retake policies with their specific target schools.

By the Numbers
| Exam Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Total Testing Time | 2 hours, 21 minutes (not including breaks). |
| Total Question Count | 298 multiple-choice questions. |
| Core Scaled Scoring | Raw scores are converted to a scaled score ranging from 200 to 800 per section, with 500 as the mean. |
| Percentile Ranking | Compares your child’s raw score against a national percentile ranking. |
| Elite Benchmarks | The 50th percentile is average. Highly selective schools screen for the 76th to 99th percentiles. |
Inside the Test
Tests vocabulary and verbal logic through synonyms, antonyms, analogies, logic problems, and verbal classification questions.
Tests non-verbal mathematical reasoning through number series, geometric comparisons, and non-verbal pattern recognition.
Tests vocabulary and passage-based reading comprehension at an accelerated pace.
Tests applied arithmetic, geometry, and algebra from the standard middle school curriculum.
Tests grammar, punctuation, capitalization, usage, and spelling. Students must identify errors in sample sentences or select correctly written options.
Our Method
We do not use a generic, pre-packaged test curriculum. Instead, we run an individualized, data-driven strategy designed to conquer the HSPT’s immense time constraints:

01
We initiate preparation with a series of practice tests modeled after the actual HSPT to assess baseline strengths, identify weaknesses, and build crucial test familiarity.
02
Focuses on a comprehensive grammar program that prepares students to recognize essential English conventions, develop writing instincts, and enhance critical thinking.
03
Aligns traditional middle school math with HSPT-specific requirements, explicitly teaching concepts like Roman numerals and rapid pattern recognition not typically covered in a regular curriculum.
04
With approximately 30 seconds per question, we teach specialized test-taking strategies to build a positive mindset and improve pacing speed without sacrificing comprehension.
05
Ensures students build the stamina to finish all 298 questions, maximizing their raw score by decisively answering every item before time runs out.
HSPT 95th Percentile — Accepted to Bellarmine College Preparatory
“Working with Cardinal Education was a total game-changer. They gave our son specific strategies to handle the time pressure so he didn’t panic. He walked into the test feeling confident, ended up in the 95th percentile, and got into his top choice, Bellarmine. We couldn’t be happier.”
HSPT Scaled Score Growth — Accepted to Sacred Heart Schools
“Our daughter needed help with the logic and sequence patterns of the test. Her tutor at Cardinal broke those sections down until they actually made sense. Her scores were way beyond what we expected.”
