Exam Blueprint
Understanding the Independent School Entrance Examination blueprint: the ISEE is a standard metric used by selective independent schools to evaluate a student’s mathematical, verbal, and analytical reading capabilities.

By the Numbers
| Exam Parameter | Middle & Upper Level Details |
|---|---|
| Total Testing Time | 2 hours, 40 minutes + two 5- to 10-minute breaks. |
| Total Question Count | 160 multiple-choice questions, plus one unscored essay prompt. |
| Core Stanine Scoring | Scaled scores are converted into a 1-9 stanine scale. |
| Percentile Ranking | Compares your child against a highly competitive applicant pool, not a national average. |
| Elite Benchmarks | Highly selective schools typically screen for 7, 8, or 9 stanines. |
Core Syllabus
Synonyms test raw vocabulary depth. Sentence completions test the ability to use context clues to reason through unfamiliar words. This section rewards genuine command of language, not memorized word lists.
Built around mathematical intuition rather than pure computation, including the quantitative comparison format. Success depends on conceptual reasoning as much as arithmetic skill.
Approximately 6 passages, drawn from contemporary and historical nonfiction and literature. Students need to identify the main idea, read authorial tone, locate supporting details, and draw inferences — all while managing real time pressure across each passage.
Tracks directly to standard school math curriculum: arithmetic, algebraic equations, coordinate geometry, and data analysis. Unlike Quantitative Reasoning, this section rewards concrete mastery of material your child has already covered in school.
A prompt-based written response. The essay isn’t numerically scored by the ISEE, but an unedited copy is sent directly to every school on the application list — so it carries more weight than its lack of a number would suggest.
Unlike some other admissions exams, the ISEE doesn’t subtract points for wrong answers. That makes leaving a bubble blank one of the most avoidable mistakes a student can make on test day. Every question should get an answer, even a guess.
Our Method
We do not believe in mass-market test prep strategies. We build an individualized instructional roadmap based on data-driven diagnostics and what fits your child’s needs.

01
We start with a full-length proctored simulation to isolate where your child is losing points and categorize mechanical errors versus content gaps.
02
Focuses on structural word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and sentence-context decoding to master sentence completions without relying on blind guesswork.
03
Builds structural fluency in translating dense word problems into clean equations and teaches the estimation strategies required for quantitative comparison questions.
04
Establishes predictable annotation frameworks and passage-skimming strategies so students can manage the tight time-per-passage constraints.
05
Trains students to eliminate definitive traps, maximize scoring efficiency, and ensure no bubble is ever left blank on test day.
8th Stanine Score — Accepted to Menlo School
“We were really worried when our daughter kept hitting 5s on her math practice blocks. Thankfully, her tutor realized the problem wasn’t the math. It was the format of the quantitative comparison questions. After teaching her the logic behind them, she jumped straight to the 8th stanine and got into her top-choice school!”
Upper Level Mastery — Accepted to Harvard-Westlake
“The vocab section on the Upper Level ISEE felt overwhelming for our son. Instead of just drilling flashcards, Cardinal helped him understand the root words and context clues. It made all the difference. He scored a 9th stanine in Verbal Reasoning, which really helped secure his spot.”
Early preparation yields the most consistent score gains.
We partner with families globally to deliver the premium competitive testing margins required by elite independent schools. If your target institutions require a top-tier stanine profile, the strategic time to start preparation is now.
